How to validate an Amazon FBA product idea before you order
Most product ideas fail on arithmetic, not on taste. The three checks below are cheap and they reject the majority of ideas before any money moves.
- The fee floor
- A Professional Amazon selling account costs 39.99 USD per month plus selling fees, and referral fees vary by category — so there is no single percentage to plug in. Source: Amazon FBA pricing
- On the upside
- "It is more than 50% cheaper for us to acquire a new customer through Amazon than it is elsewhere." — Dewar Gaines, Founder & CEO, quoted by Amazon. That is the case for the channel, not for an individual product.
1. Check that the top listings are actually the same product
Pull the top 100 rows for your keyword and look at them yourself. A "mould test kit" search often returns CO2 monitors, humidity meters and dehumidifiers alongside the actual product. If half the listings are something else, every average you were shown describes a category that does not exist.
2. Check demand is not seasonal
A twelve-month history matters more than a twelve-month average. A product that sells 5,000 units in December and 200 in July is a different business from one that sells 500 every month, even if the annual totals match.
3. Work out the contribution per unit before advertising
Start with the selling price. Subtract product cost, freight to the warehouse, Amazon fulfilment, storage, the average return rate and the referral fee. What is left is what has to pay for advertising, product improvements and unmodelled risk. If that number is thin, the category can be healthy and the product idea still fails.
4. Keep evidence and assumptions apart
Write down which numbers you actually observed and which you estimated. Ideas get killed later by a cost you assumed in January and never revisited. A conclusion that shows its own assumptions is easier to correct.
Where a tool helps
Ryndix runs these checks on one product and returns a written verdict: market size, competition, unit economics and review pain points, with evidence and assumptions kept separate. It is a first-pass judgement, not a full due-diligence report — the numbers behind a real decision still need your factory quotes and compliance checks.
Common questions
How do I know if an Amazon product idea is worth pursuing?
Check three things before anything else: whether the demand is real and not seasonal, whether the top 100 listings are actually the same product, and what is left per unit after cost, freight, fulfilment and fees.
Why do keyword tools give contradictory numbers?
Aggregate keyword fields are estimates and they contradict each other, especially for near-synonyms. The reliable check is pulling the top listings yourself and seeing whether they are the same product.
What is the fastest way to reject a product idea?
Work out the contribution per unit before advertising. If cost, freight, fulfilment and fees leave less than the ad spend needed to move a unit, stop there.
