1. One list, not four
Every duplicate and every budget surprise comes from the same cause: two purchases recorded in two places. Pick one list and put everything in it the day it happens. The list matters less than the fact that there is only one.
2. Record the amount at the moment of buying
Not at the end of the week. The entry takes ten seconds now and becomes a research project later. A running total against a number you picked in November is the only version of a budget that actually holds.
3. Write down who each gift is for
This is the single change that prevents the "two identical train sets" problem. A gift without a name attached is a gift you will buy again.
4. Record the return deadline when you buy early
November purchases have return windows that close in December. If the deadline is not written down next to the gift, it will be discovered after it has passed.
5. Write down where you hid it
"Hall closet, top shelf" sounds obvious in November. On Christmas Eve it does not. Anyone who has bought presents in advance has lost one at least once.
6. Do not retype receipts
